THOMPSON TRIUMPHS IN NEAR PERFECT VICTORY

By VW Cup, Apr 30 2017 01:29PM

The sun beamed down at Rockingham as the cars lined up on the grid, Bobby Thompson pulled up on pole with Maximum Motorsport’s Tom Witts for company alongside. A spin on the warmup lap made for flat spotted tyres for Team Hard Racing pilot Toby Davis before the race had begun. Returning to his grid position, the engine notes rose as the red lights flashed off to commence 20 minutes of Volkswagen Cup racing.

Witts rocketed off the line and took the lead into turn one, returning Walker-Tully having made a similar start displaced House on the inside charging forward in third towards the Deene hairpin. But he wasn’t to hold the place for long, House lined up his run through the Chapman Curve cutting to the inside for Pif-Paf before sealing the deal into Gracelands. With the door open Davis seized the opportunity and displaced Walker-Tully heading towards Tarzan, promoting Davis to fourth. A small moment from Witts saw Thompson use his momentum trough Gracelands and dart to the inside before running side by side with Witts, Bobby having the inside into the Brooke chicane snatched the lead back as the battle continued.

Davis closed up on the bumper of House managing to get a run along the straight and taking the position into turn one, displacing House back to fourth. Yellow flags and safety car boards were brought out with a car off at the exit of Gracelands, Ben Wallace ran wide dropping a wheel onto the dirt throwing the car into the barrier on the inside. Racing resumed as Thompson led the field onto lap five, a change of position for fourth was seen with Bond demoting House through on the inside of Pif-Paf. Thompson up front set a new lap record slowly pulling a gap to second place racer Witts who in turn was pulling a gap back to Davis in third.

The positions weren’t to change heading onto the final lap, the battle for the final step on the podium came alive exiting Tarzan with a Bond putting pressure and forcing Davis to defend his line into the chicane. Bond darted left and right but was unable to get a run on Davis, the chequered dropped with Bobby Thompson taking a dominate near perfect lights to flag victory followed by Tom Witts six seconds a drift in second place and Toby Davis in third. Post race Toby Davis was excluded due to a technical infringement, thus promoting Jamie Bond to third in the results.

“I got an average start off the line, but I’d seen Witts on the outside who seemingly had got a great start, and he took us into turn 2. I waited for my tyres to come in, and was able to get a run through Gracelands and past exiting Tarzan. I wasn’t happy when the safety car a came out but I got away well and pulled a gap, managed my tyres and brought it home. I must say thank you to GKR Scaffolding, Braintree and Team Hard for getting me out there.” Commented Bobby Thompson.

“I was able to get a great start and take the lead into turn 2, had a little moment through Graceland and Bobby was able to get back past. The safety car came out which gave me a chance to attack again, but I knew he had the legs on me, I looked after my tyres and maintained a gap back to Davis and managed the car home.” said Tom Witts.

“I had a difficult race behind Toby, he drove really well and defended enough to keep me behind which was nerve racking with House in my mirrors. But I'm happy to have inherited third position. I must say thank you to Skyline and Warton freight services for their support and of course Team Hard for giving me a great car.” Commented Jamie Bond.
