The Volkswagen Racing Cup returns to Brands Hatch for its penultimate round of the season
The Volkswagen Racing Cup returns to Brands Hatch for its penultimate round of the season with Owen Walton leading the standings in the Audi TT. Walton holds a 12 point gap to his nearest rival and will be the man to watch this weekend. Connor Jackson previews the action…
Driving for SlideSports, Walton, on 340 points, has been the series most consistent competitors and is one of only two to have finished every race this year, along with Russell Joyce for PMR Racing. Joyce leads the Hankook Trophy (for drivers who have not picked up an overall podium) with four class wins. The Golf Mk7 secured a Trophy at Croft last round, along with Mark Steel, his first of the season. Steel joins Owen Walton at SlideSports, as Simon Walton completes the trio.
Having picked up two pole positions this year, Simon Walton will be a favourite come qualifying, though is currently tied with Josh Coggan for most 2019 poles. Both Coggan and Simon Walton shined at Croft with the Audi beating the Golf driver to pole, before DW Racing’s Coggan secured the win. A repeat of their battle could be on the cards as both attempt to close the gap to Owen Walton.
Walton’s nearest challenger though, is Mark Wakefield. On 328 points the HSG Sport supported Mark Wakefield Racing driver struggled at Croft, recording his worst finish since his retirement at the start of the year. He’ll be looking to bounce back at Brands Hatch. He’s not the only independent fighting for the crown either as Rob Allum hopes to build on his back to back reverse grid wins and will be a favourite during race two.
Returning will be the Depper Duo of Martin and Jack. After skipping the Croft round, Martin has fallen to 40 points behind Walton and will need a strong final two rounds, and a dose of luck, to recover his championship. Meanwhile, son Jack will be looking for further top ten finishes and Hankook Trophies. Joining them at Maximum Motorsport will be Jeff Alden, also jumping back into the Golf after missing Croft. Completing the returning faces will be Lewis Smith for Smith Motorsport.
JW Bird Motorsports will be gunning for more podiums with Ru Clark and Tony Prendergast. Clark, the 2018 vice-champion was a mid-season addition and has proven a thorn for the title chasers, picking up two podiums in as many rounds, while a solid weekend at Croft for Prendergast recorded him two top six finishes. Clark’s father Jeff will further be racing after making his debut last round.
Also racing for JWB is Matt Evans. The Bedfordshire racer has three Hankook Trophies this season and will be hoping to draw one back on Joyce before the season finale. Completing the strong outfit will be Cheshire’s Richard Gilbert and Michael Jones.
