Three-into-one Do Mix as VW Cup Gears up for Brands Hatch

The Volkswagen Racing Cup incorporating the Goodyear Touring Car Trophy and TCR UK return to a bastion of British motorsport, as the championship lands in Brands Hatch for a triple-header.

Fresh off their long-awaited return to Castle Combe, the series is straight back in the driving seat after a short three-week break for their bumper weekend, as three races over two enthralling days of racing make for one of the highlights of this years racing calendar. Supporting Club Time Attack, the event will be front and centre during Tunerfest South which showcases the best in performance cars.

The title battle continues to hot up between teenage rivals Jack Depper and Olly Turner. Taking victory in the first race of the weekend at Castle Combe, Turner, driving the blue and yellow Samco-sponsored Golf Mk7, became the first driver to take back-to-back wins as he hunts down his second car racing title in three years. Despite nursing damage in the opening race in Wiltshire, Turner skilfully held back the advances of championship leader Depper to record another 18 points.

A reverse grid race in the second encounter would see Turner fight his way through from the back, as both himself and Depper once again featured at the sharp end of the grid. Sadly, for the JM Racing star, technical issues brought him into the pits at the end of the third lap leaving Depper to dominate the second encounter in his Scirocco. As a result, both drivers remain all square in race wins with two apiece.

Coming into Brands Hatch, Depper leads the championship by 15 points over Russell Joyce courtesy of Olly’s two retirements this season. Joyce, a series veteran, has been a stable of the VW Cup for a number of years and will be more than happy to provide an upset for the leading pair in his Mk7 Golf. Driving for Power Maxed Car Care Racing, the #72 has twice picked up a second place this year and will be eager to take that all important maiden win.

Joining him at the team will be Chris Wallis. The #52 was forced to sit out much of Castle Combe after a crash into a marshal’s post put his Mk5 Golf out of action for the remainder of that weekend, seeing him miss both races. Determined to return with a bang, the East Sussex-born driver could prove exciting to watch at his home race.

Joining the regulars will be a new (yet remarkably familiar) face as former-BTCC driver Martin Depper makes his return to the Volkswagen Racing Cup. Father of championship leader Jack, Martin has been a VW Cup race winner himself and is set to show his prodigy the ropes having been advising from the side lines alongside an eager crowd last weekend. Just like in Wiltshire, Crowds will once again be present for the action, with the Tunerfest South sold out ahead of the action on Sunday.

Rounding out our Maximum Motorsport trio and completing the grid will be Jeff Alden. The senior member of the grid, Alden has featured on the podium in three of the four races this year and will be determined to continue his consistency for the Matrix Motorsport sponsored crew.

As at the previous rounds, the VW Cup grid will be supported by the Goodyear Touring Car Trophy and TCR UK who will race alongside the championship. Full streaming can be found on the Maximum Networks Volkswagen Racing Cup YouTube and Facebook page with Free Practice going live at 10:00am Saturday 19th June.
